Part of a series KHMF, Thistle is inspired by the monotype technique used by artists, Paul Klee, Ludwig Hirschfeld Mack and Erwin Fabian. Klee developed the ‘oil-transfer drawing’ technique, with Hirschfeld Mack at the Bauhaus during the early 1920s, while Fabian first used the technique during internment camps in Australia in the early 1940s.
Monotypes from this series aim to evoke, connect and celebrate the work of three artists by presenting Klee’s playful abstract approach in shape and form, build Hirschfeld Mack’s characteristic layering of shapes and watercolour washes, while reserving small windows expressing Fabian’s isolation, desolation and captivity.
