A useless crocheted blind that lets the light in? An American flag that has, correctly, thirteen stripes but no stars? Never mind, there’s a four-star Southern Cross instead.

A useless frame, its glass broken and gone. Mock-coprolite plugs holding the top steady, while a bundle of horizontal sticks – fasces, symbols of authority – are holding its base horizontal. All made from paper. And don’t touch the blind pulls, they’re just for decoration.

Can domestic kitsch disguise the devil’s work? Can crochet cure chaos?

The film is Good Night and Good Luck, 2005, directed by and starring George Clooney.
