Inaugural Patron of The Ballarat Arts Foundation

David Hobson

Internationally-acclaimed opera star David Hobson

Ballarat-born David Hobson is one of Australia's best known operatic and contemporary performers, switching effortlessly between opera, pop and rock. His is a distinctive voice, and he has a commanding presence on stage.

First coming to prominence in the late 1980's with an award-winning performance as Rudolfo in the Baz Luhrmann production of La boheme, David was the recipient of a Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship, and his career took off. In 1994 he appeared with San Francisco Opera in the world premiere of Dangerous Liaisons with Renee Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Frederica von Stade.   He has since performed extensively with Opera Australia, in concerts, Festivals, and at major events throughout Australia and New Zealand.

He is a favourite with TV audiences through appearances on the highly-rated series of It Takes Two and Dancing with the Stars, and the festive season's Carols By Candlelight and Carols in the Domain.  David is also a highly successful composer:  his body of work includes a music theatre version of Macbeth, the chamber opera Remembering Rosie, and the soundtrack to the film One Perfect Day, which was named Best Music Score by the Film Critics Circle of Australia in 2004.  David's discography includes opera DVD's, French, Italian and Handel Arias, original compositions with David Hirschfelder and duet albums with Anthony Warlow and

Teddy Tahu Rhodes.

It's no surprise then, that David has won awards including a 'MO' Award for Operatic Performer of the Year, a Sydney Theatre Critics' Circle Award, The Age Performing Arts Award for Best Performer in Opera, and an Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Award for Best Classical Album.

With an impressively full diary of events well into the future, David still finds time to be Musica Viva's in Schools Ambassador, Ambassador for Heart Kids, and Presenter on SBS/Foxtel's new Arts Channel STVDIO. He returns to Ballarat in both public and private capacities as often as his schedule permits.

David takes his role as Patron of the Ballarat Arts Foundation seriously, and has played a major role in our MasterClass program and Made in Ballarat (MIB) Concert series.
